THUNDER BAY ISLAND LIFE SAVERS REPORT (1900 accident)

About 4:30 A.M. surfman Cleary telephoned from watchhouse that a steamer was towing a schooner that had the appearance of having lost her ?cirnunss? no signals were being made. In short time word came steamer half masting a flag. Surf boat was mustered with no delay. And her crew pulled out to ???? assistance found the Steamer "City of Rome" had collided with the schooner 'Vienna' had smashed in her port bow so she was leaking fast. Carried away her fore mast, main sail and leaving him a complete wreck. Captain of steamer did not want to go in to Thunder Bay so I requested him to tow her to an anchor close to this station. This crew pumped while the vessels crew got ?served? breakfast. I then came on shore telephoned for tug. returned sl??fted dock lovse to straighten her up got broken booms and canvases on board and this crew remained by the pumps until she reached Alpena 11:30 A.M. We rendered the vessel good assistance for which her captain was very grateful. He gave us the money to take the crew to resturant for dinner. One sailor was very news being killed by the collissins.
