This sheer wall extends straight down from the Norteast shore of Thunder Bay Island to 30 or 50 feet.
The wall is said to be part of the Niagra Escarpment that extends from the "Falls" to the Lake of the Clous in the western U.P. of Michigan.
As you swim along the bottom of the wall you will see parts of shipwrecks under bus size blocks of limestone that have broken away from the shelf.
The shore is well scoured of vegetation a 100' back from the waterline that only causes me to want to see the 20-30' waves of November come up against the wall.
Due to the abrupt nature of this feature the waves must grow to an awesome height before breaking on the shore.
The Wall is accessed from boat.
And it may be entirely possible to set an anchor on shore if the winds are from the SE through SW.
Thunder Bay Island Lighthouse is now under the care of Thunder Bay Island Lighthouse Preservation Society.
Any exploring of the lighthouse property and keys to the lighthouse is only obtainable by membership to this group.
E-mail the webmaster if you wish to have membership literature sent to you.
Camping is dis-allowed except if on a Lighthouse work bee weekend.
