PURPOSE

Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary and Underwater Preserve allows NOAA and the State of Michigan joint jurisdiction to protect a nationally significant collection of over 100 shipwrecks. Thunder Bay is the first national freshwater sanctuary and contans shipwrecks from wooden sailboats to early steel hulled steamers that span over 100 years of maritime history. As more shipwrecks are discovered and added to the 45 already known, Thunder Bay will become a wreck divers paradise. Click our Why Dive Button for a more detailed history.
